Dover Downs offers solid Monday card
While many sports enthusiasts were still recovering from Super Bowl 50 and the endless array of commercials the night before, standardbred fans were treated to a sold card at Dover Downs on Monday.
Monday evenings feature at Dover Downs was the $30,000 Open Preferred Handicap for older pacers. Highlighting the feature was the presence of Bushwacker (Tim Tetrick) the best pacer in the land right now who was made the 7-5 favorite despite being assigned the outside eight hole.
When the gate folded in the Open Preferred Handicap, Mustang Art (Sean Bier) left alertly from the five slot and the reigning Delaware Special champ rolled past Soto and Speed Again to gain command in a wicked 25.4 opener.
Mustang Art led the field into the lane the first time, but Bushwacker brushed past the early leader to gain command before reaching the halfway station in 54.3.
Bushwacker led the way down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:22.1 where Little Ben offered brief token pressure. But the favorite shook loose from him on the far turn and then held safe Mustng Art for a length victory in 1:50.4.
Although he settled for third, Doctor Butch (Tony Morgan) delivered an exceptional performance. Reserved well off the early pace, Doctor Butch angled out fourth over past the half, rallied widest of all in the lane and gained the show spot in a sharp try.
One race earlier in a non-winners of $12,501 last six starts class for older pacers, Special T Rocks (Allan Davis) brushed to command before the half and then held sway late for a two-length score in 1:52. The eight-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding should be back in the Open soon.
One race earlier on the card, Sentencing Memo (Russell Foster) benefited from a second over journey behind 4-5 choice Roll Big (Corey Callahan) and then overhauled that one in the lane to score by a length in 1:52 in a non-winners of five races or $50,001 lifetime class for pacers. One week earlier Sentencing Memo suffered the first setback of his career in a genuine paceless race.
Then one race earlier in another non-winners of $12,000 last six conditioned event for older pacers, Sparky Mark (Jonathan Roberts) overcame a first over journey to score in 1:51.2 over 3-5 choice Just A Jolt. A nine-year-old Astreos stallion trained by Dylan Davis, Sparky Mark could also join the Open ranks soon.
One race earlier in a non-winners of five races or $25,001 lifetime class, Redneckyachtclub (Roberts) benefited from a second over trip behind Bobby The Greek and outlasted Tip It On Back for a length victory in 1:53.1.
