Good Blend of Young and Old at Two Five-eighths Mile Ovals

February 21st, 2017

Monday evening's standardbred card at Dover Downs offered onlookers a good blend of superb efforts from older and younger pacers alike, while last Saturday morning's nine initial qualifiers at Rosecroft Raceway perhaps gave a glimpse into which trotters and pacers should perform well at the upcoming meet.

Monday evening at Dover Downs, Nine Ways (Montrell Teague) won a lifetime conditioned event for younger pacers early on the card in 1:53 for "Team Teague", but later a trio of older pacers garnered center stage in conditioned events.

Extreme Machine N (Allan Davis) continued his solid season at the Delaware five-eighths mile oval when he rallied to score in 1:51.4 for owner-trainer Jeff Clark of Centreville. Clark is hardly a household name among novice standardbred fans, but those who follow the sport in the Mid-Atlantic region are keenly aware of his abilities as a conditioner. His top trainee at the current meet in Kindofabigdeal, a Harrisburg purchase last fall who has performed well in upper classes in Maryland and Delaware.
Then in the split, non-winners of $9001 last six starts class for older pacers, Go Collect N (Corey Callahan) prevailed as the 4-5 favorite in 1:51.2 for trainer Dylan Davis and Sentencing Memo (Russell Foster) scored in 1:51 in the other half for trainer Arty Foster. Sixteen months ago, Sentencing Memo was simply looking to climb through his lifetime conditions at Dover, but now the Foster trainee appears poised to make an ascension into the tougher classes at the Delaware five-eighths mile oval and perhaps join the Open ranks this spring.

Saturday morning at Rosecroft, Russell Foster steered home three different winners for three different trainers. He guided Whirl Monroe, an eight-year-old Real Desire gelding home in 1:58 for Arty Foster, Jr., then piloted Lark Seelster to a two-length tally in 1:57.2. Foster then steered BWT Taj to a sharp 1:58 score in a qualifier for trotters.

But arguably the two best efforts of the morning occurred on opposite end of the  non-betting program. Theresnoway (Brian Burton) romped home 12 lengths clear in 1:58 in an early test for trotters for trainer Arlene Cameron and later Cracker Pullet (Steve Nason) scored in 1:56.2 for trainer Merle LaFountaine. Cracker Pullet is a 10-year-old gelding who still knows how to find the winner's circle in several classes at Rosecroft each spring and fall.
