Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/12/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
On tap this evening at Southland is another stellar card of 18 exciting and entertaining greyhound races. Last night's picks concentrated on the top grade A and AA contests so I thought I would give the greyhounds in the M, D, C and B grades a shot to showcase their talents and perhaps bring us some big payoffs in the process.
Race 1 - Grade D - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (1) Flying Tigerbaby as the key here as she likes the inside, has a good rush and is coming off a nice three and a half length win last time out from the same one box she's got in this race. Both the (3) Arkans Dominic and the (2) KB's Night Rock have some nice early speed so it's going to be one heck of a battle to the turn between all of these greyhounds but I do think Flying Tigerbaby with the rail position has the edge. Finishing out the play, I will include the (7) Odd Zac as he is the class of the race and does have four top four finishes in his last six races.
Picks: 1 - 3 - 2 - 7
Race 6 - Grade M - 583 yard course - The one to beat here is the (1) Keeper Ratchet. This young and talented greyhound has been impressive in his three schooling races having won two of them by 11 1/2 and 7 lengths respectively and finishing second in the other one. She is out fast and likes the inside and should be able to hold the lead. The (6) Vanzant won't make it easy for her as he shows some early speed as well. Both the (2) Atascocita Talen and the (3) Senator Susan have shown they can challenge for the front and should there be any early trouble, they could be the ones to benefit.
Picks: 1 - 6 - 2 - 3
Race 13 - Grade TC - 660 yard course - I like the rail running (1) Crt Chris to be the key here as I think he wins this one in a photo finish. He has five top three finishes in his last six races which include a win, three seconds and a third place effort. Last time he had the one box, he won by four and a half lengths. I also give the (2) Kiowa Dance a shot here as she did have a nice third place finish in grade B from an inside post just a few races back and may improve on that in this one. The (6) Macktheknife is capable but has been inconsistent of late as evidenced by a win sandwiched between two last place finishes. Still, I'll use him here in case he avoids early trouble and I will also include the (5) Oshkosh Serena as she could be the early leader, she did improve her distance time by over a second last time out so she may just surprise here.
Picks: 1 - 2 - 6 - 5
Race 16 - Grade B - 703 yard course - I'm going with the (5) PJ Spendingmoney as the key in this one as she is dropping in grade and she does have a grade A win over this distance back in May. She has been off for a couple of weeks should be well rested and ready to go. The biggest challenge should come from the (6) Flying Platinum who likes it midtrack and is not only well posted but who has a huge late kick and sure to flying down the stretch. The (1) Gracie Of Ruckus and the (4) Miss Prissy will complete the tri and superfecta plays.
Picks: 5 - 6 - 1 - 4
The Moneymaker pick this evening is in the 9th race, a grade TD contest over the 660 yard course and is the (8) Greenisle King. This greyhound was running in Ireland before making the long journey over the pond to the Southland track and since arriving he has had some trouble adjusting to the track. He is a double drop in class, having started in grade B when he arrived and now finds himself in D grade. I am going to give him another shot as he does like it wide and his best finish here was when he drew the seven box and finished fourth. He did run second in a schooling race from the eight box so even though he is a huge longshot, I'm hoping the wide box can make a difference.
