Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/16/2014

July 16th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

Welcome everyone to Southland and another evening of exciting and entertaining greyhound racing. On the card are 18 races and the picks tonight include a couple of maiden contests which will feature some very young and ready to run pups. I also have a top grade AA race that I like so it's on with the show. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (8) Keeper Socket as the key here as I think the wide box gives him the edge needed to surprise the field. This is his first official race after four schooling contests and he had trouble in each of them, I think he gets around the turn in good position to make a strong move at the end. I like the (6) TK Amazing Grace to challenge for the early lead and I like the (7) PJ Absinthe to be closing fast down the stretch so I'll use them both. To finish the play I will include the (3) GS Barbie as she has three top four finishes in her six races.

Pick 8-6-7-3

Race 6 - Grade M - 583 yard course - Here is another maiden race and I like the (2) PJ Father Dave who is coming off two straight schooling wins including an impressive 10 1/2 length romp last time out. The (7) Flying Paxil has decent early speed and should be out fast and battling for the front. The (4) Bob's Looker has struggled in his last few races but does have three top four finishes in six races so for the price, and the possibility that he could clear the turn in good shape, I'll use him here. For the tri and superfecta plays, the (1) Flying Graykrest has to be considered though his running style is mid to wide and he may encounter early trouble if he doesn't get out early.

Pick 2-7-4-1

Race 11 - Grade AA - 583 yard course - In this very competitive AA contest the choice is the (8) Beryl Drumm who is trying to make it two straight wins after a nice three length effort last time out. He is posted well as he has a mid to wide running style and should be in the battle to the wire. The (2) CBJ Irish Cream is also trying to make it two straight wins and with his good rush, should be vying for the early lead along with the (1) Mega Quasar who needs to get wide but does show a win from the one box just two races back. To finish the play, I'll include the (4) WW Blazin Spirit who has 15 top two finishes in just 28 races, she's a hard runner and won her last race by six and a half lengths.

Pick 8-2-1-4

Race 12 - Grade D - 660 yard course - I'm going with the (6) Klutch as the key in this one. He has encountered trouble the past two times over this distance course but I believe he gets a better start this time out and finds enough room on the rail to get the win. The (1) PJ Dream Big has struggled some lately but being a double drop greyhound gives him a chance to get things back on track and he does have a win over this distance from the one box earlier this season. Completing the ticket I will use the (5) K's Dreamcatcher and the (2) Bella Xanthi.

Pick 6-1-5-2

The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 17th race, a grade A contest over the 660 yard course and is the (1) K's Krieger. He is well posted for his inside running style and last time out of the one box over this distance he won. I am looking for him to break good and be in good position early to contend for the win. It's a competitive field but the rail should give him the slight edge so I feel he's worth a play here.
