Hawthorne offers interesting Wednesday card

January 26th, 2016

Harness racing fans often find midweek cards difficult to play, but Wednesday's card at Hawthorne Race Course in Illinois features a pair of interesting series.

Hawthorne will present the second leg of the Whizzer White series for younger pacers that had not won two races or earned $10,000 as of last December 1. Tomorrows card will have four divisions of the Whizzer White.

In fact, tomorrow's opener is the first of four divisions of the second leg of the Whizzer White and includes a pair of opening round winners.

Although he drew the outside post, Over Friskie (Trace Tetrick) looms as the odds-on favorite following his emphatic, 15-length score in 1:54.4 in last week's opening leg. A four-year-old Feelin Friskie gelding trained by Tom Tetrick, Over Friskie rates the prohibitive choice in the opener and the future book favorite to capture the final.

But drawing well inside of Over Friskie are two others who merit respect here. Pillage And Burn and Party Falls finished one-two in last week's opener in 1:57 in a very formful event. Both will have to improve considerably to topple Over Friskie this week and later in the series final.

Two races later in the second Whizzer White split a pair of opening round winners will leave from posts one and two, respectively.

Always Kenzer won his opening leg in 1:56.1 for trainer Kim Roth, while Prince Bayard prevailed in 1:56. Another opening leg winner, Lil Orphan Elmer will have to improve mightily off his 2:00.1 tally to be a contender in this spot.

Then one race later the third WW split, a trio of opening round runner-ups will seek to attain their first series score.

One To Draw To was a solid second as the 7-5 choice behind Always Kenzer last week and should make amends here. Mr Pickpocket was a good second to Prince Bayard and looms an obvious threat. Funny Wilson was second at 44-1 in the slowest split and will have to improve considerably.

Then one race later in the last WW division, look for Lyons Jimmydean to get in the series win column. Last week he made an early break and still rallied to get second while well behind Over Friskie and should make amends on several accounts.

Then one race later in the only division of the second leg of the Suburban Downs series for pacers that had not won five races or $25,000 lifetime as of last Dec 1, both opening leg winners and runner-ups return for this 11-horse field.

Why Ask Why, a six-year-old No Pan Intended gelding, won the faster split last week in 1:54.3, while Freedomformysoul prevailed in the other leg in 1:56.3.

Sir Mammo was a 12-1 runner-up behind Why Ask Why and could get overlooked again here. The Optimist was second to 'Freedom' last week. The field also includes Kolt Power, who rallied to get third, is joined by beaten favorites Am Magic Man and Valiente Stride
