Haskell Stakes (G1)

Baby Vino toppled several luminaries of the three-year-old division in his graded stakes debut on Saturday in the $1.005 million Haskell (G1) at Monmouth Park.
Although victorious in his previous two starts, Baby Vino was a legitimate longshot in the Haskell. While his main Haskell rivals on May 1 had been preparing for upcoming starts in the classics, Baby Vino was only just graduating, in his fifth attempt, against maiden foes at Oaklawn Park.
Thrown into stakes company in the Pegasus S. at Monmouth on June 13, Baby Vino duly won by 10 3/4 lengths, albeit against soft company. He was sent off at 28-1 in the 1 1/8-mile Haskell.
The sloppy conditions and a soft pace of :24.15, :48.29, and 1:12.01 should have greatly aided Preakness (G1) winner Napoleon Solo. He did, in fact, easily defeat the other major contenders in the Haskell, but it was not enough to withstand the rail bid of Baby Vino.
Baby Vino and Napoleon Solo hooked up approaching the turn for home and exchanged repeated bumps through the stretch, but Baby Vino found more to pull off the half-length win under Jorge Vargas Jr. Monmouth stewards investigated the stretch run but found no cause for disqualification.
United Nations Stakes (G2)
Winner: Progarm Trading | Jockey: Flavien Prat | Trainer: Chad Brown
Program Trading earned his first graded win in more than two years with a decisive score in the $500,000 United Nations (G2).
Snapping a seven-race losing streak in the June 13 Monmouth S., Program Trading improved his record over the local turf to 3-for-3, winning the UN by 2 3/4 lengths as the 9-10 choice under Flavien Prat. Owned by Seth Klarman, Program Trading covered 1 3/8 miles over turf rated good in 2:19.77 and paid $3.80.
This was a record-breaking seventh win in the United Nations for trainer Chad Brown, breaking a tie with the late Hall of Fame conditioner Mack Miller, who won all his at the United Nations’ original home of Atlantic City between 1966 and 1984.
Monmouth Cup (G3)
Winner: Knightsbridge | Jockey: Flavien Prat | Trainer: Bill Mott
Odds-on favorites Knightsbridge and Splendora had little difficulty asserting their superiority on the Haskell Day undercard at Monmouth Park on Saturday.
Favored at 1-2 in the $343,000 Monmouth Cup (G3), Knightsbridge won in a manner suggesting that longer, two-turn races might be an option for the erstwhile miler. Dictating terms throughout, Knightsbridge won by 10 1/4 lengths in a snappy 1:47.51 for 1 1/8 miles over a fast track.
Stakes newcomer Money Game incurred his first defeat in five tries by finishing second. It was 19 lengths back to Pegasus World Cup (G1) winner Skippylongstocking.
Saratoga
Diana Stakes (G1)
Winner: Kathynmarissa | Jockey: Jose Ortiz | Trainer: Chad Brown
With the top four betting choices in a seven-horse field, trainer Chad Brown held a strong hand in pursuit of a record-extending 11th victory in Saturday’s Diana (G1). Brown continued his dominance of the $500,000 feature by sweeping the trifecta.
Heavy rain at Saratoga provided the variable, turning the turf yielding, but bettors sided with the right Brown entrant in 2.29-1 favorite Kathynmarissa. Under a well-timed ride by Jose Ortiz, the daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah rallied in deep stretch to catch front-running Segesta.
Stablemate Portfolio Duration checked in another 2 1/4 lengths back in third. British shipper Cathedral barely held off Brown’s Dynamic Pricing to prevent a clean sweep of the superfecta. Ozara and Five G concluded the order under the wire.
Kathynmarissa was turning the tables on Portfolio Duration, who wired the New York (G1) in their latest, leaving Kathynmarissa back in third. Aside from the change in the course condition on Saturday, the Diana also unfolded differently for both.

Coronation Cup (G3)
Winner: Cy Fair | Jockey: John Velazquez | Trainer: George Weaver
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) queen Cy Fair was cross-entered versus the boys in Sunday’s Quick Call (G3), but she opted to lord it over fellow fillies in the $218,250 Coronation Cup (G3).
Targeting the Spa after missing Royal Ascot, the George Weaver pupil looked as good as ever in a stalk-and-pounce demolition job. Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez had mapped out his strategy from the rail post, and Cy Fair executed it perfectly.
The 0.53-1 favorite let Sapphire Beach go ahead and used her as the target. After fractions of :22.54 and :45.01, Cy Fair angled out, lengthened stride, and put the race away. The Not This Time filly drew 2 1/2 lengths clear while clocking 5 1/2 furlongs on the good Mellon course in 1:01.83.

Del Mar
San Diego H. (G2)
Winner: Journalism | Jockey: Umberto Rispoli | Trainer: Michael McCarthy
Long odds-on favorite Journalism was already spotting weight to his rivals in Saturday’s $300,000 San Diego H. (G2), but when the gate opened, the 125-pound highweight also spotted them a substantial head start. Even that early deficit wasn’t enough to offset his superiority, and Journalism recovered to prevail at Del Mar.
San Clemente H. (G2)
Winner: Somerset West| Jockey: Armando Ayuso | Trainer: John Sadler
Trainer John Sadler had the disappointment of scratching Full Serrano from the San Diego, but he had cause to celebrate when his stakes debutante Somerset West sprang a $73.40 upset in the $202,500 San Clemente H. (G2). The daughter of Kantharos and past Sadler trainee Constantia thereby boosted her credentials for the Del Mar Oaks (G1).
