How to bet Turfway Park's $2,639 Super Hi 5 carryover on Feb. 11

Looking for an appealing carryover to chase on Thursday? Look no further than the $2,639 Super Hi 5 pot up for grabs at Turfway Park.

Granted, the size of the pool isn’t huge. But it doesn’t come with any strings attached. You won’t have to assemble a unique winning ticket to claim the carryover—all winning bettors will split the pool equally.

That’s assuming, of course, that anyone puts together a winning ticket. Thursday’s Super Hi 5 is available in Race 8, a $7,500 maiden claiming event for older horses racing one mile over the Tapeta course. With 14 entries in the mix (including two also-eligibles), unlocking a winning combination from this $1 wager will be easier said than done.

The key to keeping costs manageable might be taking a stand with #3 Samson Lee (5-2) on top. Two starts back, the Tom Drury-trained four-year-old finished fourth for a $30,000 tag racing one mile at Turfway, beaten 6 1/4 lengths after tracking the early pace. Dropping down multiple class levels is a winning move 50% of the time for Drury, and a sixth-place effort sprinting on Jan. 7 should have Samson Lee sharpened for a peak effort on Thursday. Keep in mind, Drury strikes at a 33% rate with horses stretching out from sprints to routes.

The underneath slots are tougher to narrow down. #1 Empty Holster (4-1) and #2 St. Paddy’s Daddy (4-1) have been facing tougher company, but they’ve yet to race at Turfway and are hardly standouts from a Brisnet Speed rating perspective. #9 Captain Billy Roy (7-2) and #6 Sonic Burn (10-1) both earned solid figures when fourth and fifth over this course, distance, and class level on Jan. 6 and might be better choices to finish in the money.

One live longshot worth considering is #7 Mattersoftheheart (20-1). The four-year-old gelding never factored in his debut sprinting six furlongs for a $15,000 tag at Turfway, but a poor start didn’t help his chances. The Buff Bradley trainee will stretch out in distance, drop in class, and add blinkers for his second start, introducing the possibility of an improved performance.

We’ll round out our tickets with the first-time starter #11 Likely Legal, whose sire—Liaison—was a Grade 1 winner on synthetic.
