Player Quick Pick: Monmouth for 5/25/2014
by Ryan Dickey
Monmouth race 10 | 5:12 pm ET Claiming (25-20) for 3&up going 1-1/16 mi. (T)
MOST PROBABLE WINNER: 5-Runyan Humor
If this horse wasn’t making his Monmouth turf course debut, the morning line would have probably been lower. Runyan Humor has been claimed three times since December 27 of last year, so he’s at least a well-sought-after racehorse! Although he hasn’t won since a turf race last October, he did beat the morning line favorite of this race back then. Trainer Jorge Navarro has very good ROI in running first off the claim, in claiming races in general, as well as turf and route races. Hopefully, the horse will retain close to his 4-1 price. Bet him on top of exotics and in multi-race bets.
VALUE HORSE: 6-Dr. Goldfarb
As much as it’s normally a good idea to let a horse get a start in off the shelf before betting it, backing Dr. Goldfarb in his first race since January 24 is advisable here. ROI’s for trainer Patrick McBurney off the shelf 61-180 days: (12 .33 $5.03); in route races (57 .25 $5.06), and in claiming races (34 .21 $6.27). This horse will be dialed-up, and should bring a nice price.
OTHERS TO CONSIDER: 8-Vanquisher and 2-Fan Base
The morning line favorite Vanquisher is a ten year old war horse. Having hit the board in 38 of his 79 career starts, he boasts a dozen wins on the grass at this particular distance. Although it is his first shot at the Monmouth, this horse is a pro’s-pro. Should get a piece. Play him in exotics.
Fan Base should have lower odds than 12-1 come post-time. He has three wins and a place in 8 grass starts at this distance, and has the speed ratings to match the top contenders. If you’re looking for a price to fill out exotics, here’s your horse.
