Player Quick Pick: Monmouth for 8/10/2014

August 10th, 2014

by D.S. Williamson

The two features at Monmouth on Sunday are sprints over the turf. Race 8 is a 5 furlong jaunt over the lawn for two-year-old fillies while Race 11 is a 5.5 furlong race over the turf for fillies and mares three and up.

Monmouth Park 8 | 4:36 pm ET Colleen 2yo F going 5f (T)

3– Momma’s Favorite – Trainer Kathy Mongeon only wins 4% dirt to turf, but it’s tough to look past Momma’s Favorite in this. Sired by Sky Mesa, she’s out of a Chester House mare and has decent turf breeding. Not only that, but even though she lost her maiden try, it was over the slop and she showed promise. This race is wide-open so why not take a shot on a filly that could improve in her second lifetime race, has some turf breeding, and whose trainer wins 30% when she enters a horse into a non-graded stakes race?

5 – Nicky’s Brown Miss – In her first try over turf, this Big Brown filly was absolutely sensational closing from 6.5 lengths in the stretch to finish third by only 1 length. Jockey C.C. Lopez is going to have to keep her slightly closer in this since that race was at 6 furlongs and this is at 5, but if she shows the same kick, she could definitely win this. Trainer Savino Capilupi hasn’t won a race yet this year. Nicky’s Brown Miss might break the streak for him on Sunday.

8– Neilinger – This Gary Contessa trainee was somewhat so-so finishing fifth by 1.75 lengths in her very first race. But, that event was over the turf at 5.5 furlongs. So, experience over the lawn should help her well here. The race was also a high-level maiden event at Saratoga, meaning that this stakes race is actually a step down for Neilinger.

7 – Ju Ju Eyeballs – The odds figure to be lower than 5/2 when they break from the gate, but is there any reason not to put money on this Jason Servis trainee that has a 7-2-3 record from 14 lifetime races? Not only does she have the fantastic overall record, but Ju Ju Eyeballs is also 3 for 3 over the Monmouth turf. She’s 4 for 4 at the distance and keeps top jockey Paco Lopez. She’s the one to bet to win and key in all of the exotics.

6 – Joya Real – This five-year-old mare trained by Kathleen Demasi was extremely impressive when going wide and still managing to win by a neck in a fast time in a $40K 5 furlong turf sprint race over the turf in her last. If she repeats that effort, she could beat Ju Ju Eyeballs in this and she’ll definitely offer better odds. The 6-4-2 record out of 18 lifetime races tells horseplayers exactly how tough she is. Consider for the win bet if she looks ready to run in the warm-up.

2 – World Gone Wright – Trainer Robert Smith is winning races at 36% at the current Monmouth meet. Jockey Orlando Bocachica, who sticks for Sunday’s event, guided this Forty Grams sired filly that has won 3 out of 5 lifetime to a brilliant 1.5 length victory in an OC $30K 5 furlong turf sprint on the front end in her last. She seemed to really relish the turf and, get this, she ran a half in :43. She’s obviously going to get the lead in this unless Paco aboard Ju Ju Eyeballs decides to push Bocachica early. Check out the 3 furlong work on Aug. 5 that she ran in :34. Gate-to-wire is a real possibility with this speedy miss.
