Player Quick Pick: Saratoga early Pick 4 for 7/27/2014
Wet weather in New York has wrecked havoc on Saratoga's card today, so please check scratches & changes by clicking here before playing any wagers today

Sunday’s card at Saratoga is littered with big, wide-open fields. In fact, the late Pick Four presents a ridiculous challenge, one that goes against my philosophy in writing these Pick Four selections. If I won’t even consider playing a ticket, due to finances, ticket structure, etc., I won’t give it out, and Sunday’s late Pick Four ticket wound up being a $75 ticket with a very low comfort level.
As such, we’re going with the early sequence Sunday, which starts in Race #2.
RACE #2: I’ll go three-deep in this starter allowance for older fillies and mares. Favorites #6 Flamingo Lane (3-1) and #8 Edie (5/2) are logical, and I’ll also throw in live longshot #1 Tizallheart (10-1). She’s woken up of late since switching back to turf, and she gets a big rider change to turf ace Julien Leparoux.
RACE #3: Here we have a sprint for 2-year-old maidens. I went four-deep in here, using #2 Skipalute (7/2), #4 Curalina (5-1), #5 High Dollar Woman (5/2), and #6 Hopefaithjoy (3-1). Skipalute ran a winning race first out despite a wide trip, Curalina has shown ample speed in the mornings despite being bred to go much longer, High Dollar Woman has a strong local work for a fantastic second-out trainer in Tony Dutrow, and Hopefaithjoy boasts the ever-powerful Pletcher-Velazquez combination.
RACE #4: There have been plenty of turf marathons early on in the meet. This is another one, as 10 will go 1 3/8 miles.
I went two-deep in here, using #3 Decisive Edge (7/2) and #6 Northeast Bound (5-1). Decisive Edge is a plodding type who has run second on three straight occasions, while Northeast Bound draws Joel Rosario and goes back to the grass for Dale Romans.
RACE #5: We finish with another wide-open turf race. I went four-deep in here using most of the logical horses. #1 Lady Candidate (6-1) goes to the Mike Maker barn and tries turf again, #5 First Whippoorwill
(3-1) drops down in class after a second-place finish in her 2014 debut, #9 Who’s Mary’s Daddy (5-1) may be the speed of the speed and is also dropping in class, and #11 Holiday Drama (7/2) adds Joel Rosario after winning two in a row at this level in Delaware.
It’s not a ridiculously cheap ticket, but at $48, it’s affordable and provides some meaningful coverage in deep races. If you’re looking for a sequence to play and don’t want to tear your hair out, I’d advise swinging for the fences early on in the card. Good luck!
