Three favorites worth opposing in Turfway’s $84,320 Single 6 carryover

The final week of racing at Turfway Park’s winter meet kicks off on Wednesday with an $84,320 carryover in the Single 6 pool.

Assuming no one hits the jackpot-style Pick 6 before the meet concludes on Saturday, the final day of the meet will feature a mandatory dispersal of the carryover pool.

Of course, there’s still a chance someone will construct a unique winning ticket and sweep the whole pool before Saturday. It might even happen on Wednesday! The six-race sequence contains a handful of potentially vulnerable favorites, which we’ve highlighted below. Beat them all—with a few longshot winners throw in for good measure—and you might just enjoy a six-figure payday.

Race 3 ($30,000 Maiden Claiming): #7 Miner’s Gem (2-1)

At first glance, Miner’s Gem is a logical favorite while dropping in class out of a pair of maiden special weights. But the daughter of Distorted Humor was soundly beaten on both occasions, and in terms of Brisnet Speed ratings, she isn’t the fastest filly in Wednesday’s field. #1 Hot Heels (5-2) actually ran faster when finishing third in her debut for a $30,000 claiming tag, and trainer Kevin Fletcher wins at a 21% rate with second-time starters. Miner’s Gem and Hot Heels are both are logical contenders, but my money is on the rail runner to reach the finish line first.

Race 6 ($50,000 Allowance Optional Claiming): #4 Sweet Spin (5-2)

Sweet Spin certainly warrants respect after rallying to finish third over this track, distance, and class level on March 5. She’s facing just five rivals and retains the services of leading jockey Gerardo Corrales, but Brisnet Speed ratings suggest this race is wide open. Sweet Spin actually finished a nose behind #1 On Brilliant (3-1) in her last run, and as we noted in our Picks and Plays for Wednesday, the stakes-experienced #3 Lady Edith (3-1) looms as a major threat while transitioning from turf to Tapeta.

Race 8 ($5,000 Claiming): #1 Magna G Force (7-2)

Magna G Force has won two of her three starts sprinting at Turfway this winter, but stretching out over one mile is a question mark for the speedy seven-year-old. Her 10 rivals are much more experienced running long, and several enter in hot form, so there are plenty of logical choices if you want to oppose Magna G Force. A couple of nice-priced alternatives include #9 Hero of the Best (8-1), a gate-to-wire winner under these conditions on March 5, and #2 Butter Up Katie (8-1), who beat slightly easier company by three lengths one week ago.
