Vulnerable favorites to oppose in Gulfstream's $1,048,970 Rainbow Pick 6 dispersal

Get ready, horseplayers! Saturday is a big day of racing from coast to coast. Half a dozen stakes races at Fair Grounds are the highlight of the afternoon, but if you’re fond of chasing carryovers, you’ll also want to check out the action at Gulfstream Park and Turfway Park.

At Gulfstream, a massive $1,048,970 Rainbow Pick 6 pool is set for mandatory dispersal, and there’s a chance the final pool will exceed $5 million. At Turfway, the carryover pot is much smaller—$2,639 for the Super Hi 5 available in Race 8—but with so many bettors turning their attention to Fair Grounds and Gulfstream, a clever Turfway player might well be able to sweep the Super Hi 5 pool to the tune of several thousand dollars.

Whether you’re playing Gulfstream, Turfway, or both, the key to cashing big payoffs is finding live longshots and beating favorites. With this in mind, we’ve gone through the races to highlight a handful of vulnerable favorites worth opposing at short prices:

Gulfstream Park

Race 7 (Maiden Special Weight): #10 Golden Whim (5-2)

Golden Whim has the pedigree to thrive in this one-mile turf test, considering he’s a son of stamina influence Medaglia d’Oro out of the Distorted Humor mare Weekend Whim, the same mating that previously produced Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) winner New Money Honey. But trainer Todd Pletcher has gone just 2-for-42 (5%) debuting three-year-old males in turf routes at Gulfstream since 2016, and Golden Whim is set to face a very deep field. #1 Tour of Duty (7-2), #4 Neotropic (12-1), and #6 Q F Seventy Five (10-1) are other well-bred youngsters worth considering for high-profile connections.

Race 10 (Allowance Optional Claiming): #5 Structor (9-5)

Structor is undefeated in three starts for top turf trainer Chad Brown, most notably rallying to victory in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). But Structor hasn’t run in 15 1/2 months, and there’s no guarantee he’ll reproduce his two-year-old form after missing his entire sophomore season. Don’t be surprised if the advantage swings in favor of an in-form runner like #7 Ever Dangerous (9-2), who displayed a nice turn-of-foot to win the Bryan Station S. at Keeneland last fall.

Turfway Park

Race 8 ($5,000 Claiming): #9 Classified Info (7-2)

Many bettors will count on Classified Info to get the job done under hot jockey Chris Landeros, considering he’s dropping down to the $5,000 claiming level after competing for a $20,000 tag as recently as November.

But Classified Info has done his best running over one mile or farther, and his two efforts sprinting have been less inspiring. It’s also worth noting the son of Bayern isn’t a standout in terms of Brisnet Speed ratings; #12 Hopped Up (12-1) and #8 Grand Hideaway (15-1) posted similar figures when finishing second and third over this course and class level on Jan. 22, stamping these tried-and-true sprinters as logical longshot alternatives to the favorite.
