Horses to single in the $37,229 Sunset Six carryover

May 3rd, 2026

The Sunset Six, a special Pick 6 wager featuring the final three races per day at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita, boasts a $37,229 carryover for Sunday.

Sunset Six: $37,229 Pick 6 carryover (4:04 p.m. ET)

The Pick 6 kicks off in Race 7 at Gulfstream Park, a $17,500 claimer for horses who have never won two races. However, races where horses were entered for $8,000 or less aren’t considered for eligibility purposes, which has allowed three-time winner #5 Final Payment (1-1) to slip into this 6 1/2-furlong dirt dash.

Final Payment enters in red-hot form. He’s won two straight starts dashing six furlongs at Gulfstream. First, he took an $8,000 claimer for non-winners of two races by three-quarters of a length, earning a career-best 94 Brisnet Speed rating. Then he scored by two lengths in an $8,000 claimer for non-winners of three races, earning an 81 Brisnet Speed rating.

None of the other horses entered in Race 7 have recently earned a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 80. If Final Payment repeats either of his last two performances, he can win Race 7 without difficulty under hot jockey Diego Herrera. We recommend singling Final Payment in the Sunset Six.

Another viable single can be found in Leg 3 of the Sunset Six, which is Race 9 at Gulfstream Park, a $75,000 handicap taking place over five furlongs on turf. #1 Governor Sam (9-5) should be formidable while dropping in class out of five straight graded stakes.

Governor Sam has competed with aplomb against tough competition. As a juvenile, he finished a pacesetting third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1). As a three-year-old, he dominated the Quick Call (G3) by 3 1/2 lengths and placed in two other graded stakes, including the Franklin-Simpson (G1).

Governor Sam ended his sophomore campaign with an eighth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1). Sunday’s contest at Gulfstream marks his four-year-old debut, and his first start since being gelded. Trainer George Weaver wins at a 23% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, so we expect Governor Sam to deliver a strong performance in his comeback.

Good luck!
