Best Bets and Quick Picks

Churchill Downs: Race 2: Allowance (six furlongs on dirt, 1:15 p.m. ET)

#1 Delightful Claire (6-5) placed twice at the graded stakes level last year, running second in the Prioress (G3) and third in the Dogwood (G3). In the Prioress, she rallied from last place in a small field; in the Dogwood, she set the pace.

Delightful Claireโ€™s versatility in terms of running style is a positive. Trainer Philip Bauer wins at a 20% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, so Delightful Claire should be tough to beat while dropping in class for her 2026 debut.

Letโ€™s bet Delightful Claire over #4 Chatter (5-2) in an exacta.

Selections

  • #1 Delightful Claire (6-5)
  • #4 Chatter (5-2)
  • #5 Shared Vision (3-1)

Wagers

  • $20 Exacta: 1 with 4

Gulfstream Park: Race 7: $25,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (one mile on dirt, 3:54 p.m. ET)

#1 Caldera (1-1) showed promise as a three-year-old last year, finishing second by narrow margins in the Sunland Park Derby and Bathhouse Row S.

Caldera hasnโ€™t raced in over a year, but trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. wins at a sharp 22% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, and encouraging workouts (including a bullet half-mile from the starting gate in :47 1/5) suggest Caldera is ready to return a winner.

Letโ€™s bet Caldera over #2 Skellig Michael (2-1) in an exacta.

Selections

  • #1 Caldera (1-1)
  • #2 Skellig Michael (2-1)
  • #3 Oasis Prince (10-1)

Wagers

  • $20 Exacta: 1 with 2

Oaklawn Park: Race 7: Maiden Special Weight (1 1/16 miles on dirt, 5:32 p.m. ET)

#9 Authentic Kitten (12-1) debuted in a six-furlong maiden special weight at Oaklawn last month. After setting quick fractions of :21.72 and :45.58, she tired in the final quarter-mile to finish eighth.

Authentic Kitten has the pedigree to stretch out over one mile for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Adding blinkers offers potential for improvement, and thereโ€™s a chance sheโ€™ll secure an uncontested lead, which could similarly trigger a step forward.

At 12-1, a win bet is in order.

Selections

  • #9 Authentic Kitten (12-1)
  • #10 Tahlequah (3-1)
  • #2 Skyforge (8-5)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #9 Authentic Kitten

Carryover Watch

Churchill Downs: Race 1: $8,635 Super High 5 carryover (12:45 p.m. ET)

The opening race on Churchillโ€™s โ€œThurbyโ€ card features an $8,635 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.

Race 1 is a $50,000 maiden claimer taking place over six furlongs on dirt. #1 Banned for Life (8-5) is a logical favorite. Heโ€™s competed exclusively against maiden special weight, allowance, and allowance optional claiming competition, most recently running third in a six-furlong $50,000 allowance optional claimer over the Fair Grounds main track.

Since trainer Al Stall Jr. wins at a powerful 39% rate with horses competing in the claiming ranks for the first time, dropping in class might be all Banned for Life needs to visit the winnerโ€™s circle.

We recommend keying Banned for Life on top in the Super High 5. Underneath, emphasize #2 Optical (6-1). He showed flashes of talent as a three-year-old last year, most notably finishing third in the seven-furlong Harrods Creek S. at Churchill Downs. A quick half-mile workout in :46 3/5 at Churchill last Saturday suggests Optical is ready to vie for a top-five finish while dropping in class for his 2026 debut.

Santa Anita: Race 4: $44,113 Pick 6 carryover (5:39 p.m. ET)

The Thursday card at Santa Anita is highlighted by an enticing $44,113 Pick 6 carryover. The final pool for the $2 wager is projected to reach the $300,000 range.

If youโ€™re looking for a single to build tickets around, let us point you toward #4 Cloudy Women (6-5) in Race 5, a $25,000 claimer for fillies and mares who have never won two races. The six-furlong turf sprint has drawn nine horses (including one also-eligible entrant), but Cloudy Women is a compelling favorite.

Cloudy Women ran strongly over this course, distance, and class level on Feb. 15. After rating in fifth place in a 10-horse field, she rallied down the homestretch to finish second, beaten only 1 1/4 lengths while earning an 82 Brisnet Speed rating equal to the par winning number for Thursdayโ€™s conditions.

The rest of the Race 5 entrants donโ€™t look all that tough on paper, so if Cloudy Women repeats her last performance, she can head to the winnerโ€™s circle as a short-priced favorite.

Good luck!
