Best Bets and Quick Picks

Saratoga: Race 1: Maiden Special Weight (5 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 12:35 p.m. ET)

Two-year-old #1 Perpetual (7-2), purchased for $500,000 earlier this year, has a shot to win on debut for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. She’s put together an encouraging work tab over the Saratoga training track and is slated to be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, a 21% winner teaming up with Pletcher over the last two months.

As a son of early-maturing sprinter Drain the Clock, who won the Woody Stephens (G1) at age three, Perpetual has the potential to show speed from an early age. Let’s single her to start a double wager.

Selections

  • #1 Perpetual (7-2)
  • #7 Biblical Justice (6-1)
  • #6 Margie’s Girl (3-1)

Wagers

  • $20 Double: 1 with 6

Saratoga: Race 2: Jersey Girl S. (six furlongs on dirt, 1:07 p.m. ET)

#6 Mythical (1-1) has posted seven decisive wins from nine career starts, with her only defeats coming in graded stakes. She’s won half a dozen stakes, including the 5 1/2-furlong Tremont S. against males at Saratoga last year.

Whereas none of the other Jersey Girl entrants have posted a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 95, Mythical has posted numbers of 98 and 105. If she brings her A game, she’ll be tough to beat, so let’s single Mythical to conclude our double wager, then bet her over #1 Carmel Coast (5-2) and #3 Goodall (9-2) in a trifecta.

Selections

  • #6 Mythical (1-1)
  • #1 Carmel Coast (5-2)
  • #3 Goodall (9-2)

Wagers

  • $5 Trifecta: 6 with 1,3 with 1,3 ($10)

Churchill Downs: Race 1: $30,000 Claiming (six furlongs on dirt, 5:00 p.m. ET)

The fastest entrant in this field from a Brisnet Speed rating perspective is #5 Editor (7-2). Two starts back, he earned an 89 when trouncing a next-out winner by 6 1/2 lengths in a $30,000 maiden claimer at Keeneland.

Editor subsequently misfired in a tough six-furlong allowance at Churchill Downs, finishing fifth behind Madaket Road, the runner-up from the 2025 Woody Stephens (G1). Dropping back down in class for a $30,000 claimer should put Editor in contention for victory, so let’s bet him to win and hope his enticing 7-2 morning-line odds hold up.

Selections

  • #5 Editor (7-2)
  • #1 Imperial Ruler (7-5)
  • #2 Harbe (5-2)

Wagers

  • $30 to win on #5 Editor

Carryover Watch

Charles Town: Race 4: $101,971 Pick 6 mandatory payout (8:25 p.m. ET)

Thursday night at Charles Town features the mandatory payout of a huge $101,971 carryover in the Charles Town 6-12, a 20-cent Jackpot Pick 6 featuring a modest 12% takeout rate.

Mathematically speaking, this isn’t the easiest Pick 6 to solve. The six races contain 56 horses (averaging about 9.3 per race), and only two are also-eligible entrants. Before scratches, there are 612,360 possible Pick 6 outcomes to consider.

If you’re looking for a single to build tickets around, our best recommendation is #8 Masterwork (6-5) in Race 7, a $10,000 starter optional claimer for three-year-olds and older horses racing seven furlongs around two turns.

Masterwork has been on fire as of late, winning four straight 6 1/2-furlong sprints at Charles Town. First, he dominated a $5,000 claimer by 5 1/2 lengths, earning an 82 Brisnet Speed rating. He was claimed out of that race by high-percentage trainer Ronney Brown, a 24% winner this year.

Masterwork subsequently won a $15,000 allowance optional claimer by half a length, an allowance by 3 1/4 lengths, and a $10,000 starter optional claimer by 6 1/2 lengths. Those triumphs yielded Brisnet Speed ratings of 75, 78, and 86, with the latter ranking as Masterwork’s career-best number.

The other horses entered in Race 7 have largely struggled to crack the 80 Brisnet Speed rating plateau in recent starts. Masterwork appears well-spotted to snag yet another win under hot jockey Moises Santaella (a 21% winner teaming up with Brown over the last two months), so we feel confident recommending Masterwork as a Pick 6 single.

By singling Masterwork in this nine-horse field, we can slice the number of possible Pick 6 outcomes to consider from 612,360 down to 68,040. That’s an excellent start toward assembling a winning ticket on a reasonable budget.

Good luck!
