An overflow cast of 16 have been entered to contest the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) at Del Mar on Saturday. One of the most exciting and challenging of all of the Breeders' Cup races over the weekend, the five-furlong dash on the green can often produce especially healthy returns, and I’ll take a crack at a pair of superfecta plays.

I don’t have the chops to key a single runner on top in the heat and will use a pair of contenders in the leading spot. Trainer Adrian Murray will bring a pair of threats in from Europe, and both have appeal to me. The value of the race, in my opinion, is with #11 Bucanero Fuerte (20-1) at big odds. The Wootton Bassett colt was a Group 1 winner at two, and while his 2024 campaign didn’t go according to plan, the four-year-old has righted the ship with a trio of strong runs this season.
He won his first two to kick off the season before checking in a close third in the deep Flying Five S. (G1) over yielding ground at The Curragh in his most recent appearance. The colt is two-for-four with a placing at five furlongs, and although he might be better at six panels, I still feel that he rates a huge chance on Saturday due to his class. Umberto Rispoli picks up the live mount.
Pilot David Egan will stick with stablemate and Flying Five winner #3 Arizona Blaze (5-1), who has bagged a trio of group races in 2025. The fleet sophomore was second in the Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot in June and also runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) at this venue in 2024. Bay colt has speed but proved at Del Mar last season that he can rally from off the pace with effectiveness as well. He will be a big threat if he gets a sensible trip from this post slot.
While it’s difficult to tab #7 She’s Quality (20-1) for a win in the dash, I do feel as though the filly could make the frame at a big price. The Jack Davison trainee is no stranger to running with the boys, and six of her seven runs with the top sprinters in Europe have been positive in 2025, as well.
#1 Motorious (7-2) missed by a neck in the event last campaign and sports a robust 5-4-1-0 mark on the local lawn in advance of Saturday. Phil D’Amato's pupil will need to overcome a potentially troubling rail post with Antonio Fresu on board.
#5 Bring Theband Home (12-1) was awesome at Saratoga in the summer, and I’m willing to ignore his recent subpar showing at Woodbine for Mark Casse. The Into Mischief gelding is very fast and capable of producing some big results with his best performance.
George Weaver’s #6 Governor Sam (15-1) will likely be overlooked in the tilt with Prat on board, but he is very consistent and also earned a career-best Brisnet Speed number in his lone prior try on the course. He’s a prime top-four candidate at a number.
