Churchill Downs: Single 6 heads into weekend with $114,107 carryover

November 14th, 2020

The Single 6 jackpot at Churchill Downs continues to grow, with the carryover pool reaching a hefty $114,107 heading into Saturday’s card.

If you’re skilled (or lucky) enough to cash the only winning ticket on the day, you’ll be rewarded with a six-figure payoff. But even if multiple bettors assemble winning tickets for this jackpot-style Pick 6, the reward should still be worth your time and effort.

Friday recap

After rain forced the transfer of two races to the main track, Friday’s Single 6 sequence wound up being among the chalkiest of the meet. Four favorites starting between 3-5 and 2-1 reached the winner’s circle, along with a pair of fourth choices starting at 9-2 and 5-1. A theoretical $2 win parlay across all six winners would have returned a mere $199.28. The $0.20-cent Single 6 performed significantly better, producing a payoff of $447.04.

Saturday insights

With 11 races on the card, Saturday’s Single 6 will kick off in Race 6, a $15,000 maiden claiming event for fillies and mares racing a mile on the main track. #12 Paddy Kaye’s Wild (4-1) is a slim favorite on the morning line, but she’s facing 11 rivals and seems tough to trust for win purposes after finishing second in three straight races. #8 Grimpante (8-1), a stoutly-bred daughter of Empire Maker, is arguably more appealing while stretching out in distance and dropping down from the $30,000 claiming level.

The feature race of the afternoon is Race 10, the $200,000 Mrs. Revere (G2) for 3-year-old fillies. Recent Valley View (G3) winner #3 Stunning Sky (5-2) is the most accomplished horse in the field, but she’s also a late runner in a race without much speed on paper. #1 Hendy Woods (3-1), exiting a sixth-place effort against much tougher competition in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1), has shown a bit more tactical speed and can spring a small surprise under hot jockey Tyler Gaffalione.

The action wraps up in Race 11, a 1-mile maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies. The par winning Brisnet Speed rating for this class and distance is an 83, but none of the experienced runners have reached this plateau. Furthermore, logical favorites #12 Honorifique (3-1) and #11 Rookery (7-2) have drawn outside posts, setting up the potential for wide trips.

With these factors in mind, perhaps the stoutly-bred first-time starters #3 D’oro Forever (12-1) and #4 Pledge (12-1) can get involved at nice prices. The former is a daughter of Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Lemons Forever, while the latter is conditioned by hot trainer Mike Maker, who strikes at a 24% rate with horses debuting over a mile or farther.

Good luck!
