Ten years ago, a young stallion named Uncle Mo made headlines when his son Nyquist prevailed in the 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1).
Nyquist was a member of Uncle Mo’s first crop of foals, and he helped kickstart Uncle Mo’s accomplished and acclaimed stud career. Sadly, Uncle Mo died at the end of 2024, but he still has chances to sire a second, posthumous Kentucky Derby winner.
One of Uncle Mo’s best hopes for 2026 is Class President, born in 2023. The bay colt showed unwavering tenacity in the 1 1/16-mile Rebel (G2) on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, prevailing by a nose after a hard homestretch battle.
What a horse race! 👀

Class President’s affinity for running long on dirt is in keeping with many of Uncle Mo’s best runners. Certainly, Nyquist excelled as a dirt router; in addition to the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby, he won the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby (G1), 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), and 1 1/16-mile FrontRunner (G1) during his decorated career.
Other top-tier dirt routers sired by Uncle Mo include Mo Donegal, winner of the 1 1/2-mile Belmont (G1): Arabian Knight, winner of the 1 1/4-mile Pacific Classic (G1); Adare Manor, a two-time winner of the 1 1/16-mile Clement L. Hirsch (G1); Kingsbarns, triumphant in the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster (G1) and 1 3/16-mile Louisiana Derby (G2); Unbridled Mo, winner of the 1 1/16-mile Apple Blossom H. (G1); A Mo Reay, winner of the one-mile Beholder Mile (G1); Bast, conqueror of the 1 1/16-mile Starlet (G1) and 1 1/16-mile Chandelier (G1); and Outwork, winner of the 1 1/8-mile Wood Memorial (G1).
Occasionally, Uncle Mo sires talented grass racers, and even sprinters—Golden Pal, for example, won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2). But dirt horses represent the majority of Uncle Mo’s most accomplished runners, and the average winning distance of his progeny (7.5 furlongs) indicates he’s a source of stamina more than speed.
The same is true of Class President’s dam sire, Quality Road, whose progeny win at an identical average distance of 7.5 furlongs.

Quality Road was an accomplished dirt racer who won the one-mile Metropolitan H. (G1), 1 1/8-mile Donn H. (G1), 1 1/8-mile Woodward (G1), and 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby. He was highly effective in miles and short routes, but struggled over 1 1/4 miles, going 0-for-3.
However, that hasn’t stopped Quality Road from passing on stamina at stud. Much like Uncle Mo, he occasionally sires talented sprinters, but on the whole, he’s known for his route racers. Just look at the four U.S. champions he’s sired—National Treasure won the 1 3/16-mile Preakness (G1) and 1 1/8-mile Pegasus World Cup (G1), Abal Tasman nabbed a bevy of Grade 1 route races including the 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks (G1), Caledonia Road took the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), and Corniche nabbed the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and 1 1/16-mile American Pharoah (G1).
The list of Quality Road’s major route winners goes on and on. City of Light won the Pegasus World Cup, Emblem Road nabbed the 1 1/8-mile Saudi Cup (G1), Dunbar Road starred in the 1 1/4-mile Alabama (G1), Spring Quality took the 1 1/4-mile Manhattan (G1), Bleecker Street prevailed in the 1 1/4-mile New York (G1)… and we haven’t even mentioned Bellafina, Clicquot, Roadster, Hootenanny, Salty, and Illuminant, all Grade 1 winners racing one mile or farther.
Even Top Quality, the dam of Class President, showcased Quality Road’s tendency to sire route racers. While Top Quality failed to win at the graded stakes level, she proved highly competitive in black-type stakes at Emerald Downs and Hastings Racecourse, winning the 1 1/16-mile Boeing S., 1 1/16-mile Strawberry Morm H., and one-mile Irish Day S. She also ran third in the 1 1/8-mile Ballerina (G3).
Prior to Class President, Top Quality foaled one-mile Leonatus S. runner-up American Speed and six-furlong Goldfinch S. runner-up Keepsake.
The cross of Uncle Mo with a Quality Road mare gives Class President a pedigree packed with classic stamina. Between them, Uncle Mo and Quality Road have sired winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont, so all three legs of the Triple Crown should be suitable targets for Class President.
