Breeders’ Cup 2026: Historic legacies on display in winners’ pedigrees

Breeders’ Cup performers of ages past loom large in the pedigrees of the 2026 winners, across both Future Stars Friday and Championships Saturday.

Moreover, the profound influence isn’t restricted to sire lines. Three winners are direct matrilineal descendants of Breeders’ Cup heroines.

Turf (G1) star Benvenuto Cellini sports the closest maternal relationship, as the son of 2018 Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) romper Newspaperofrecord. Two more winners can count Breeders’ Cup vixens as great-grandmothers in the female line (i.e., third dams) – Haffner (Juvenile Turf [G1]) traces to Storm Song, the 1996 Juvenile Fillies (G1) champion, and Further Ado (Dirt Mile [G1]) descends from Beautiful Pleasure, the 1999 Distaff (G1) queen.

Further Ado is one of four 2026 winners sired by Breeders’ Cup winners. He’s by Gun Runner, the third-placer in the 2016 Dirt Mile as a sophomore who captured the 2017 Classic (G1) during his Horse of the Year campaign at four. Further Ado is the fourth winner by Gun Runner, following Sierra Leone (2024 Classic) and Juvenile Fillies champions Echo Zulu (2021) and Super Corredora (2025).

Mile (G1) victor Deterministic, as a fourth-generation Breeders’ Cup winner, offers a particularly robust case study. He’s by the 2015 Dirt Mile hero, Liam’s Map, who is in turn by 1995 Juvenile winner Unbridled’s Song, a son of 1990 Classic champion Unbridled. Another branch of this same male line, via 2015 Triple Crown and Classic star American Pharoah, furnished Saturday’s Filly & Mare Turf (G1) scorer Kathynmarissa.

Deterministic also features Breeders’ Cup winners prominently on his dam’s side. He’s out of a mare by 2004 Sprint (G1) champion Speightstown, and his granddam is a daughter of two-time Classic-winning Hall of Famer Tiznow (2000-01).

Tiznow factors as the broodmare sire of Friday’s Juvenile Fillies victress Emphatic, who has even more connections on her dam’s side. Her second dam, a full sister to Tapit, is a granddaughter of 1992 Classic-winning Hall of Famer A.P. Indy and Unbridled.

Emphatic is herself a third-generation winner on her sire’s side. She’s by Nyquist, the 2015 Juvenile champion who was emulating his sire, Uncle Mo (2010), in the same race. Nyquist is now responsible for three Juvenile Fillies scorers, including Vequist (2020) and Immersive (2024), and four Breeders’ Cup winners overall, thanks to Nysos in the 2025 Dirt Mile.

Uncle Mo also appears as the broodmare sire of Nitrogen, the Distaff star. Nitrogen is the fifth winner by the recently departed Medaglia d’Oro, who was twice runner-up in the Classic (2002-3). Had the Dirt Mile existed in his day, Medaglia d’Oro might well have been on the Breeders’ Cup honor roll himself. But he’s well represented there as a sire, courtesy of Hall of Famer Songbird (2015 Juvenile Fillies), New Money Honey (2016 Juvenile Fillies Turf), Bar of Gold (2017 Filly & Mare Sprint [G1]), and Talismanic (2017 Turf).

Medaglia d’Oro’s legacy was likewise on display through his paternal great-grandson, dazzling Sprint winner T O Elvis (by Violence’s son Volatile). T O Elvis has even stronger Breeders’ Cup ties with Classic winners close up on his dam’s side. He’s out of a mare by Hall of Famer Curlin (2007), and his second dam is by Wild Again, who just prevailed in the 1984 inaugural.

Medaglia d’Oro is also an ancestor of Filly & Mare Sprint romper Ways and Means. Her broodmare sire is the Medaglia d’Oro stallion Warrior’s Reward.

Ways and Means was one of an amazing six winners hailing from the sire line of Storm Cat, who was just mugged on the line in the 1985 Juvenile. She achieved a Breeders’ Cup laurel that eluded her sire, Practical Joke, the third-placer in the 2016 Juvenile and fourth in the 2017 Dirt Mile. Practical Joke is out of a mare by Distorted Humor, paternal grandsire of Turf Sprint (G1) dynamo Bacio (by Maclean’s Music), who is out of a Storm Cat-line mare.

Practical Joke is himself by the influential patriarch Into Mischief, who added two more wins to bring up his total to 11 – a new Breeders’ Cup record. Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty rolled in the Classic, and Hughes remained unbeaten in the Juvenile.

Interestingly, both Sovereignty and Hughes were succeeding where their broodmare sires had come up just short. Sovereignty is out of a mare by Bernardini, the 2006 Classic runner-up, when trying to emulate his sire, A.P. Indy. The bottom half of Sovereignty’s pedigree also includes Unbridled and Seeking the Gold, the 1988 Classic runner-up.

Hughes’s dam, K P Dreamin, is by 2011 Juvenile runner-up Union Rags and out of a mare by Hall of Famer Point Given, who also just missed in the 2000 Juvenile. Point Given occupies the exact same position (the second dam’s sire) in the pedigree of Nitrogen.

The other three Storm Cat-line winners were all grandchildren of Scat Daddy – Haffner, by 2018 Triple Crown sweeper Justify; Libertango, the Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) queen by No Nay Never; and Sun Goddess, the streaking Juvenile Fillies Turf star, by Sioux Nation.

Justify boasts three Classic winners in the bottom half of his pedigree. His dam is by Hall of Famer Ghostzapper, the record-setting 2004 Classic champion by 1998 star Awesome Again. Also lingering further back is A.P. Indy.

Scat Daddy, fourth in the 2006 Juvenile, provides another example of generational Breeders’ Cup performers. He’s by transatlantic champion Johannesburg, who won the 2001 Juvenile after his own sire, Storm Cat’s son Hennessy, was just denied in the 1995 edition.

Unbridled’s Song foiled Hennessy that year. Beyond his role in the sire line of Deterministic, Unbridled’s Song lurks deeper within the pedigrees of T O Elvis (as the broodmare sire of Volatile) and Bacio (as the broodmare sire of Maclean’s Music).

Bacio has Breeders’ Cup winners further back on his dam’s side, with Juvenile father-and-son champions Capote (1986) and Boston Harbor (1996) making a distant appearance.
